My Dignity is Worth $5,000
By Amanda Waas
What Not to Wear is TLC’s bitchy show that takes clueless and ugly young women, humiliates them on national television, and leaves them with a new wardrobe that they’ll never wear and a new haircut that was given based on what fruit their head is shaped like.
The problem with the show is that while the hosts are well-meaning, the fashion disaster is usually a hostile party. Think about how you would feel. You’re out bowling with some friends on a Friday night, you get a gutter ball, you turn around to drown your sorrows in a basket of curly fries, and you see every person you’ve ever met along with a camera crew and two well-known fashionistas cheering and telling you that you dress like crap.
But wait! There’s more. Your friends have been secretly filming you, just to show the world how awful you really look on several different occasions. Hey, those are some great friends you’ve got there! During the show, they even interview the slob’s friends and they all say something along the lines of, “Peggy would be so pretty if she wasn’t so ugly.” And off you go! Box up your entire wardrobe and head off to the Big Apple so we can make fun of everything you own.
Now, from the premise that I’ve described above, many people would think that I wouldn’t like this show because it’s so mean-spirited. However, most often, the things that I love the most are mean-spirited. I love What Not to Wear almost as much as I loved the short-lived reality show on A&E called Designing Blind, where an unsuspecting couple gets their house redecorated by a blind man. It’s gold, I tell you, pure, evil gold.
