Generator Magazine October Issue Preview

The Generator's first issue of the semester will hit the stands the second week of October.

Here's a sneak peek of the new column by Kristin Kaschak,
"Sex in the Poughkeepcity"

“This one’s on me.” It’s a line that you’ve either heard or spoken at some point in your four years of academia. The purchasing of a drink is one of the most fundamental conversation starters in the world of relationships. A proverbial mating-call, if you will. The male specimen uses this clever little trick to show, not only that he is generous in paying for his target’s vodka-cranberry, but it’s also a nice little sign that an interest has sprung (among other things). This advance is almost always made in the hopes that this lovely young woman will get sloshed enough to throw herself at him by the evening’s conclusion. Either way, it’s a classic.

The female view of this cliché, but appreciated move is three-fold. She will accept 9 out of 10 times (who is going to turn down a free drink when funds are low?) However, the intention of this acceptance is what really matters. First, there’s the “Aw, that’s so sweet” response. In this case, Betty is interested in her Daddy Warbucks and sees this gesture as a sign that this young man is interested in her. Here, our man not only has a chance for some loving that night, but she might be considering him a candidate for a shout-out in her AIM profile (which will probably send him running home to Connecticut). Second, we have the “Score! Free Booze! Hey, you’re hot.” This is probably the most common inner-monologue of the lady in our story. Stoked on her free drink she has just received, she is equally amped that she can add a pretty face to her roster of conquests (yes, boys, we think like that too. Shocking, I know.)

For the rest of the story, check out the October 2006 issue of Generator Magazine.
